ABRA

Abra is a Ukrainian artist whose practice is centered on painting and explores inner states, contemplation, existential shifts, and experiences of transition.
In 2009, she graduated from the Ukrainian Academy of Design with a degree in easel painting. After completing her studies, she worked independently as an artist, creating visual imagery and album covers for music projects. Her early practice developed at the intersection of painting, drawing, and music, with a particular interest in the relationship between image, sound, and psychological states.
From 2013 to 2023, Abra worked in the tattoo field as an artist and studio owner. Her direct engagement with the human body, pain, memory, and personal narratives became an important part of the formation of her artistic thinking. This experience shaped her understanding of the figure, corporeality, and the image as a carrier of inner experience.
Since 2022, Abra has been working from a countryside studio near the forest, where painting has become her primary means of concentration and inquiry into inner experience. Removed from the pace of the city, her current practice is grounded in observation, slowness, and prolonged attention to a single environment, which have become integral to the way her images develop.
Her current work engages with themes of transition, loss of stability, existential crisis, solitude, and the search for meaning. Rather than illustrating psychological states directly, Abra approaches them through figure, space, colour, and the tension between forms. For her, contemplation is not a passive condition but a way of registering subtle internal shifts and translating them into painterly form.
Her paintings create a space for slow looking, where the image does not offer a definitive answer but leaves the viewer alone with their own experience.

Statement

ABRA is a Ukrainian artist whose practice explores the subconscious, mythological structures, and the inner transformations of the individual within contemporary reality.

Working primarily with painting, I create images in which figure and form exist in a state of tension between reality and the imagined, the corporeal and the symbolic. My practice explores liminal states moments of transition in which meaning has not yet taken a fixed form. I approach painting as both a visual language and an act of contemplation, where observation becomes as significant as the process of creation itself. Rather than offering fixed narratives, my paintings create a space for pause: an environment that invites presence, attention, and embodied awareness. My practice is grounded in slowness and inward perception, where contemplation becomes a way of restoring a connection with one’s inner reality. I am interested in states of transition, dissolution and renewal, inner isolation, and psychological vulnerability. My works do not illustrate, they activate interpretation. Through distortion, recurring motifs, and metaphorical figures, I explore how inner experiences shape our sense of self and our perception of the world.
